In a June 2021 interview with Annie Mac of BBC Radio 1, Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor) opened up about the comparisons between her and Eilish and revealed whether they were friends.
“We only sent a few small messages when she was very young. She’s so, so sweet, ”Lorde said. “There are only a handful of people who understand what it’s like to be a teenager and to have this level of scrutiny of your body and your brain.”
The singer added that she is close to her family, as is Eilish with her own family, which can come in handy for young artists “when your world changes.”
“She just does such a good job,” Lorde concluded of Eilish.
Fans craved a collaboration
Fans of Eilish and Lorde have been begging the two to collaborate for years. In 2018, Eilish performed a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” on As a version, which Lorde complimented, according to ABC. Many fans immediately asked the two singers to work on a song together, but a collaboration has yet to take place.
In an interview with Jenesais Pop that year, Eilish spoke about the potential of a collaboration with Lorde.
