You probably upgraded to the iPhone15 during the holiday season. But now that Samsung has just completed its flagship launch fanfare for the Galaxy S24 series, it’s time to start talking about what’s next. The next major smartphone we expect from Apple is the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series.
Rumors about this iPhone 16 started almost as soon as the iPhone 14 launched in late 2022. At the time, rumors were flying that Apple would do this. remove notch entirely in favor of a more consistent design. But then the standard iPhone 15 adopted it, so we wonder what might happen in the design pipeline.
Current rumors are pointing towards a new stacked design for the rear-facing camera lenses on the standard iPhone 16. At the same time, the iPhone 16 Pro could have an additional input serving as a camera button. The iPhone 16 screen sizes could come in four disparate offerings, the idea being that there’s a little more for everyone in the Pro tier. We won’t know until Apple reveals the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. But it’s fun to speculate.
When will the iPhone 16 arrive?
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to arrive around the same time as the last decade of iPhone launches. There’s an unspoken understanding that Apple updates the iPhone every fall with an improved look and new features. People are still queuing at the Apple Store for the iPhone launch.
Apple’s latest cadence was to launch the iPhone after Labor Day, in mid-September. If you want to pre-order on the day the iPhone 16 is announced, I would be hesitant to make plans then.
How big will the iPhone 16 be?
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro should all have very different screen size offerings than previous generations. In recent years, the Pro and regular models offered the same medium and large sized configurations. But this time, Apple is expected to make the Pro variants larger than regular phones.
The iPhone 16 should be similar in size to the iPhone15: a 6.1-inch screen for the so-called iPhone 16 and a 6.7-inch screen for the iPhone 16 Plus. The iPhone 16 Pros will be larger: 6.2 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and a “plus” 6.8 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro Max – it lives up to its “maximum” name if the screen is also big.
A report from a foreign manufacturer suggests that the iPhone’s display technology will integrate a new OLED using a micro-lens array (MLA). The new displays should be brighter and more energy efficient.
iPhone 16 design
Prepare to get more buttons in the next generation of iPhone. The iPhone 16 is supposed to get the iPhone 15 Pro Action button. This is the quick-press button on the left side of the iPhone that replaces what was once a physical mute button. By default, the button mutes the system like it used to, or you can go to iOS settings to reconfigure the shortcut.
The haptic button that has been talked about for years could finally find its place in the iPhone 16 Pro. There is growls from a capture button located on the right side of the iPhone, where cellular antennas typically reside. This could be the haptic area, called the capture button, with the ability to tap to take a photo or swipe up and down to zoom in and out. This would give the iPhone a more camera-like feel, and it’s not unlike the extra programmable button that many Android makers have tried before.
Expect the iPhone 16 to have a stacked array of cameras rather than the stovetop design that’s been around for what seems like eons. A few makes I depicted it as a pill, but it will probably remain square, as that has become the signature back of the iPhone.
iPhone 16 performance rumors
A cooler Apple Bionic
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will likely follow in the footsteps of iPhone15 and 15+. Apple replaced those phones with an A16 Bionic with “performance tweaks,” and the iPhone 16 will likely do the same with the 15 Pro’s A17 Bionic. The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro will probably introduce us to the A18 Bionic.
There is a some evidence suggesting that Apple will stick to a conventional naming scheme and instead launch the A18 and A18 Pro Bionic, with the professional version offering an additional GPU core.
The iPhone 16 should run cooler after complaints that the iPhone 15 was overdoing it in the heat department. A graphene heatsink could help alleviate the relative heat of the iPhone chassis that caused so much buzz last fall.
Space video for everyone
As I mentioned, the stacked cameras come to the back of the iPhone 16. There’s a reason for Layout: This particular camera array is best for recording spatial video content. It’s not hard to believe this, as it seems like something Apple would like to help justify the existence of its exorbitantly priced developer-centric AR headset, the Apple Vision Pro.
The iPhone 16 Pro will also improve its distant vision capabilities. A super telescope periscope lens might be on the way, which would help stabilize your hand when trying to photograph that bird in the sky during a nature hike.
A better Siri is on the way.
If you were frustrated by Siri’s inability to understand you, hope may be on the horizon. The iPhone 16 should have a better microphone for all your Siri requests – even though I just muttered the name as I typed it, the iPhone 15 Pro Max picked it up surprisingly quickly.
Trust Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published some AI-related predictions for the iPhone 16, including that it will have a better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). With Google and Samsung positioning AI as a reason to buy their devices, it makes sense for Apple to follow a similar path, at least for marketing purposes.
We will update this page with any new rumors about Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. Stay tuned here with us.
