08/06 Update below. This article was originally published on June 5
Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup is “ahead of schedule” and on the eve of WWDC we already know that it contains both much anticipated design changes, a big battery boost and new cameras. oversized. But now two more massive improvements have been revealed.
In a new investor report seen by MacRumors, analyst Wedbush revealed that Apple will double the top level of storage for iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max to 1TB and also add LiDAR sensors to every new iPhone model. for the first time.
Update 06/06: Bloomberg a revealed which for many will be the most exciting part of the next iPhone, ahead of its official unveiling at WWDC today: iOS 15. The next generation of Apple’s massively popular software platform will be included in the iPhone 13 line at launch (planned for september) and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will use WWDC to show off the best features of iOS 15. These include the biggest redesign of iMessage in years, with major notifications productivity upgrades and privacy, while iPadOS will have improved multitasking and Home screen widgets to align with iOS. Each year, Apple also releases some iOS features exclusive to its next-generation iPhones. Don’t expect Apple to give away anything here today, although the next-gen iOS beta has been a rich source of leaks on the iPhone in previous years. Watch this place.
08/06 Update: Recent leaks revealed that Apple is on the verge of dramatically increase battery capacity on the iPhone 13 lineup and, after iOS 15 launched at WWDC yesterday (an update packed with new efficiencies), a lawsuit has been filed that further adds fuel to the fire. Appleinsider reports that the lawsuit cites a plethora of battery drain and performance limiting issues in iOS 14 as a sign of “Planned Obsolescence‘. This is not surprising since both issues have been prevalent in all versions of iOS 14, including the last two updates with iOS 14.5.1. performance reduction of up to 60% for a number of users while the current update, iOS 14.6, has again been the subject of numerous reports of extreme battery discharge. While proving deliberate obsolescence Seems far-fetched to me, iOS 15 upgrades and the iPhone 13 lineup’s physical battery increase shows Apple is being proactive, even though it seems ready to go and go.
1TB iPhone 13 Pro models
Wedbush’s claim about the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro models is interesting on two levels.
First, popular industry insider Jon Prosser initially made the claim in October before doubling down on it in January, but he had been an isolated voice so far. Plus, this decision makes a lot of sense considering Apple’s introduction of ProRaw Photography which combines RAW images with iPhone image processing. ProRaw files can be over 10 times larger than standard iPhone HEIF and JPEG images.
Second, the trickle-down effect. The current storage configurations of the iPhone 12 Pro are 128/256/512 GB. 128 GB was only introduced last year, so I would expect it to remain so, but a jump to 512 Going to the mid-level would make a lot of sense with massive upselling potential for upgrades that typically stick to the entry-level model. Make it happen Apple.
LiDAR for everyone
Where I’m more skeptical, however, is Wedbush’s claim regarding LiDAR. Detailed diagrams of the iPhone 13 have already been leaked and they appear to show two cameras repositioned diagonally next to a flash and improved mic beamforming, but no LiDAR. Prosser himself is also skeptical about this. Both Prosser and Wedbush have strong backgrounds, but I share the doubt with the former.
On the other hand, if Apple is to make LiDAR and its awesome 3D scanning a thing, the company needs to encourage broader developer support and that only happens when you bring its capabilities to all models.
That said, even if LiDAR fails to do so, the iPhone 13 lineup already seems to have more than enough firepower to be another massive sales success. Earlier this week we found out that the lineup will have much larger batteries and that combines with a 20% more power efficient chipset, 120Hz ProMotion displays (Pro models only), the biggest cameras in the world. history of the iPhone, next-gen 5G modems and (finally) a smaller notch. Add 1TB of storage, I expect the iPhone 13 range to sell like hot cakes (especially in pink).
Fortunately, we don’t have to wait long for their release.
