Hollywood-born hotel group The Standard, backed by celebs Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro, has a party reputation in the US and UK. Its top-notch properties are Instagram catnip, and hotel rooftop bars tend to climb to the top of their cities’ list within a year of opening. Today, the international boutique hotel group is building its first hotel in Australia.
Fitzroy will be added to The Standard’s list of locations, which includes London’s Kings Cross, New York’s Meatpacking District, the Maldives, and downtown Los Angeles. The hotel group is partnering with Melbourne developer Deal Corp to bring the 127-room hotel to life over the next two years. Planned for Rose Street, Fitzroy, the $ 60 million hotel will have seven levels, including a rooftop bar or restaurant.
It’s one of seven new locations for The Standard, which has plans for new hotels in Bangkok (opening this year) and Singapore, as well as a few other European cities. The company started in 1999 and its hotels have a playful, modern vibe and a maximalist aesthetic. Australia’s first hotel, designed by Woods Bagot, will have an industrial feel, in keeping with the history of the suburbs.
Peter Miglis, senior design manager for Woods Bagot, said in a statement: “We designed [this hotel] be local – carry on the architectural traditions of Fitzroy and support the artistic and cultural spirit of the neighborhood. Fitzroy’s story of corner pubs, workers’ chalets, large housing and industry has inspired our approach to building facades.
Construction of the Standard Hotel Fitzroy will begin in mid-2021. It is expected to open in 2023.
