Famous beauty brands have been popping up left and right over the past few years, some critically acclaimed, like Fenty Skin, while others leave a lot to be desired. When Scarlett Johansson announced in June 2022 that she was launching a skincare line, I wasn’t just skeptical; I was confused. It’s one thing for a celebrity known for her signature winged eyeliner or red lips to collaborate with a brand or create an eponymous brand, like Gwen Stefani’s GXVE Beauty. However, Scarlett Johansson’s skincare brand, The Outset, was a career move I didn’t see coming, despite the fact that the Marvel actor undeniably has a glowing complexion.

So you can imagine my surprise when it turned out to be one of the best skincare brands I’ve tried in my eight years of testing and reporting on all things beauty.

To create The Outset, the actress teamed up with former beauty and fashion executive Kate Foster to formulate clean skincare foundations that do more for your skin with fewer (but better) ingredients. Her first collection included a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, vitamin C eye cream, and night cream that, when used together, create a complete regimen you can use day or night . Following the success of the initial launch, The Outset has since launched an exfoliating micro polish, an ultra-light botanical oil and a blue clay mask.

I’ve been testing the brand’s first products for almost a month and can say that The Outset backs up their claims that every item has a purpose and that this treatment “works for you, not the other way around.” Below you can find my mini reviews of each, but overall there isn’t a product that hasn’t impressed me.
