Did Indiana Basketball lose Trey Kaufman to Purdue?
Trey Kaufman announced on October 20 that he would commit on the last day of the month. This created an exciting countdown for Hoosier fans as we waited to see who would win between IU, Purdue, North Carolina, Virginia, and the state of Indiana.
Then, Adam Schefter’s Twitter equivalent in Indiana – Sam Story – tweeted that Kaufman’s decision was between Indiana and Purdue. We’ve reached the decision date and people are gushing on Twitter from Kaufman to Purdue after this tweet from Blaire Westall.
At first, we didn’t know what this Twitter user was referring to. Hardly anyone else could confirm whether or not Kaufman let this information leak over live radio. Purdue fans had daringly speculated on the Silver Creek High School star at their school all day, and it seemed like extra noise.
Then Peegs.com founder Mike Pegram, a recruiting expert, tweeted this:
On top of that, Pegram had his 247Sports Crystal Ball pick as Kaufman at IU, but has since changed it to Purdue.
It should be noted that Kaufman is expected to deliver his decision live on radio at 6 p.m. ET tonight. It’s not a pre-recorded sound they’re playing on the radio, it’s a live engagement.
This is disconcerting news because Kaufman and his family have been so secretive about his decision during the recruiting process. After all this secrecy, the news escapes the night before the actual engagement in a way that doesn’t even make sense.
These rumors were of little value at first, but Pegram’s actions make me think they are legitimate. If they’re truly legitimate, it’s a rare loss for Archie Miller in the recruiting landscape. He’s been pushing hard for Kaufman for months, and usually this strategy ends up winning a rookie’s heart.
I’ve written before that I believe Kaufman has a higher cap than any recruiting target in Indiana during the Miller era. With the right coaching, I think he could one day be an NBA All-Star. Now it looks like he’s playing for the enemy. This one stings.
