Opening the webinar, IFFO Director General Petter Martin Johannessen highlighted the important role marine ingredients play in supporting the growth of aquaculture, with half of the raw material already certified as responsible origin. IFFO Director for China, Maggie Xu, highlighted the ability of marine ingredients to contribute to food security. In 2020, based on FAO and IFFO data, marine ingredients contributed to the production of 7 kg of fish per capita. It is estimated that 30-40 million tonnes of additional feed ingredients will be needed in aquaculture feeds globally by 2030.
IFFO’s director of market research, Enrico Bachis, noted that just over 5 million tonnes of fishmeal and 1.2 million tonnes of fish oil were produced in 2021 – a figure consistent with previous years. He also noted that 30% of the raw materials used worldwide to produce fishmeal and fish oil come from by-products. According to TripleNine sales manager Jon Tarlebø, fishmeal production in Europe in recent years has been around 600,000 tonnes, with much of the production coming from salmon trimmings.
IFFO’s technical director, Dr Brett Glencross, reported on the FAO’s announcement earlier in 2022 that 65 percent of global fish stocks were considered well managed, which was more than 80 percent of global fish biomass. It is important to note that recent studies have clearly demonstrated that when effective fisheries management is put in place, it is clearly possible to rebuild fish stocks.
James Frank, Director of MSICeres, shed some light on the fishmeal and fish oil industry in Peru, based on 82 industrial and residual plants. The quota set by the Peruvian authorities on November 23, 2022 for the second anchovy and white anchovy fishing season in the center-north of the country is 2.283 million tonnes, or 33% of the biomass.
Asia and China supply more than 80% of the world’s farmed fish and consume 70% of marine ingredients used in aquaculture, but only 30% of fish oil is used in aquaculture feed, explained Enrico Bachis. However, Dr Xia Fan, Deputy Executive Director of the China National Feed Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Beijing), explained that domestic fishmeal production in China is low and most high quality fish meal is imported.
“It is very important to strengthen access to safety and risk analysis of fishmeal to promote the healthy development of feed production, animal husbandry and aquaculture in China” , she insisted.
According to Armando Coppel of Maz Industrial, Mexico contributes 1.35% to the world catch of small pelagics. Currently, a total of 94 active vessels catch over 750,000 tonnes of small pelagics per year.
