Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta has warned Lionel Messi will leave the club if he is not elected.
The Catalan club will choose its next president on Sunday from a list of three candidates.
Laporta faces Toni Freixa and Victor Font and Messi’s question is of great importance.
The Argentinian maestro tried to force his way out of the club last summer after being disappointed with the direction they were heading in as his relationship with then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu was at an all-time low.
Messi has been forced to stay for at least another season but can leave this summer with a free transfer.
Fans are hoping whoever gets elected can convince the 33-year-old icon to stay at Barcelona for the rest of his career.
Laporta believes he is the only candidate with a chance to make Messi stay.
“I have a great relationship with Leo and he will consider any proposal I make,” he said.
“If I don’t win I’m sure Leo won’t stay at Barcelona. Messi will evaluate the offer we make to him.
“I am convinced that if the other candidates win, Messi will not stay at Barcelona.
“He was not happy during [rival candidate, Toni] Freixa’s time on the board.
“It is [Messi] not just driven by money. He wants a competitive team to win. I’m sure he’ll listen to my offer just like me [sure] that if someone else wins, they will leave.
