Idrissa Gueye confirms Everton Premier League survival as Sean Dyche’s fairytale week continues

Everton confirmed their Premier League status for another season following their 1-0 win over Brentford.

Idrissa Gueye scored the only goal of the match after an hour to see them move past Brentford into 15th place.

But more importantly, it means the Toffees are mathematically safe from the drop with three games remaining, 11 points clear of 18th-placed Luton Town.

It comes after a miraculous week in which they won the Merseyside derby against Liverpool on Wednesday night, a result which also all but ended their rivals’ Premier League victory.

That followed a crucial 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest last Sunday, making it three wins in six days – without conceding a goal.

It’s exactly the scenario Sean Dyche would have dreamed of when looking at the schedule ahead of the rest of Everton’s matches.

The Toffees next face Luton and Sheffield United, with the former fighting for their lives and the latter already relegated, although the Premier League appears to be casting doubt on this.

After a 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea just two weeks ago, some Everton fans would have feared the worst.

But Dyche galvanized the team to safety after a difficult campaign which saw them drop points on two occasions.

The game against Brentford was poor quality, with Gueye providing the only real standout moment when he scored first time into the top corner after the Bees had failed to clear their lines.

This didn’t faze the Goodison Park crowd, who celebrated wildly and applauded their players after a brilliant week of results.

They took advantage of Luton’s defeat against Wolves earlier on Saturday, giving Everton the chance to confirm their safety with three games remaining.

Everton manager Sean Dyche rejects the Toffees’ change of form as he swapped his suit for a tracksuit after a huge win over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby in their battle to avoid relegation.

“Perfect. A big rebound from Chelsea. There are still three games to enjoy,” Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said after the victory.

“A lot of pressure the last two years and deductions this year, the guys dug in massively. Perfect week. Three wins, three clean sheets.”
