The historic winter froze much of Texas, leading to surreal scenes in areas of the state known to be hot and dry.
In Dallas, where February’s high temperatures are typically near 60 degrees, Thomas Black posted an image on social media ice cubes hanging from a ceiling fan in the hallway of a building.
Black stumbled upon the “almost apocalyptic scene” early Monday morning. In a cold hallway, a pipe had apparently burst and the leaking water froze on the fan.
In recent days, Black has witnessed even more surreal views: A frozen pool, icy corridors and water springing from buildings.
“Pipes are bursting everywhere,” said Black, whose apartment lost water but mostly retained its electricity.
At least 20 people have died from the intense cold and a series of storms that have moved from coast to coast in recent days. In Texas, about 3 million homes and businesses went without power on Wednesday.
The winter storm could be a “once a generation” event for Texas given the extremely cold conditions, AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said earlier this week.
But the state braces for more winter weather in the days to come, as more than 100 million Americans are on the verge of another winter storm spanning the plains to the east coast, the National Weather Service has said. .
