Back to basics. What do people need to rest and sleep? They need to feel safe, both physically and emotionally. Is your home a safe place? (I have to ask, because many homes are not.) Were there any large or small transitions? Do you use punishments, the threat of punishment, or severe consequences throughout the day? Are you threatening to take your presence away from him? These threats, while common among parents, can cause a lot of upheaval in preschoolers. People need to feel secure, and they do so by staying close to those with whom they are connected. If you threaten to walk away from your son, he remains in a low or even high panic. His nervous system is nervous, and you’ll see behaviors like jumping out of bed to follow you, being clingy, and crying to name a few.
