PORTLAND, Mich. – I-96 in County Ionia was closed on the east and west sides after an estimated 50-100 car crash on Saturday.
According to Michigan State Police, a multi-vehicle crash occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday on eastbound I-96 near Portland in Ionia County, involving between 50 and 100 vehicles.
An additional crash on the west side of I-96 resulted in the closure of the freeway on both sides near the eastbound mile marker 66.
Officials say vehicles not involved in the crash were able to pull off the highway and clear congestion for soldiers after whiteout conditions improved.
A warming and family reunification center has been set up at the Church of the Nazarene in Portland for those involved in the crash. Family members can now collect those involved in the accident after being transported from the scene to the center by bus.
Michigan State Police said while injuries were reported, there were no serious injuries as a result of the crash.
There was no update from police on the highway closure Saturday night.
