It was last month when we saw an updated version of the Hyundai Kona and today we have a new batch of spy photos with the model. However, these new photos are much more exciting as they represent the performance variant N of the crossover. Join us to discover the future flagship product of Kona.
The prototype here has full camouflage masking its specific N settings and our photographers have told us that the performance crossover will be based on the lifting model. Despite the heavy disguise, a few important touches remain visible, including the larger wheel arches, the Brembo brakes with red calipers and the massive double tailpipes at the rear. Interestingly, Hyundai compares the Kona N to a Cupra Ateca, which is a bigger and more expensive SUV.
We first heard of the South Korean automaker’s plans for a sporty Kona in May 2018, when it was reported that a prototype of the model had already been developed, despite the lack of a production green light. Apparently, as these spy photos confirm, the project has finally been approved for production and is now at a more advanced stage of development.
According to preliminary details, the Kona N will have a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine shared with the i30N. In the hot tailgate, the engine generates 275 horsepower (205 kilowatts) and 260 pound-feet (352 Newton-meters) and it should gain a little more power when the i30 facelift debuts. Whether the Kona N will rely on the pre-lift engine or benefit from its reworked version, this remains uncertain at this stage. As for transmissions, expect a choice between a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
