Hurricane Ian: Waves inundate roads in Key West as storm upgrades to Category 4
After spending most of Thursday as a tropical storm, Ian has again been upgraded to a hurricane as it targets the coast of South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. ET update that Hurricane Ian was “targeting the Carolinas and Georgia with life-threatening flooding, storm surges and high winds.”
“Ian may strengthen slightly before landfall and is expected to weaken rapidly in the southeastern United States Friday through Saturday,” the advisory said.
Dozens of rescue operations have taken place across Florida after unprecedented flooding caused by one of the most powerful hurricanes on record in the United States.
Thousands of people are stranded across the state as Coast Guard helicopters were seen tearing people off rooftops after several feet of water pounded neighborhoods. Some 2.5 million people are currently without electricity.
Meanwhile, damages and economic losses from Hurricane Ian could amount to $120 billion, according to a new estimate.

“We have notified the NFL, after consultation with local and state agencies, that we are prepared to play Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium as originally scheduled,” the team said in a statement. .
The game is scheduled to start at 8:20 p.m. ET.
“We would like to thank all local government agencies and the thousands of emergency personnel who have worked tirelessly over the past few days to ensure our region would be ready to respond if needed. We would also like to thank the Miami Dolphins organization for their assistance and hospitality in allowing us to use their practice facilities this week,” the statement added.
