Sri Lanka and the University of Moratuwa (UOM) have signed a memorandum of understanding
Understanding (MoU) to enable educated and talented young people in Sri Lanka to
to further improve their ICT skills and to be competitive
Growing ICT industry as part of Huawei’s long-term digital inclusion
initiative – TECH4ALL, to help Sri Lanka realize the vision of the “Smart Nation”
from the country.
Dr.
Bandula Gunawardena Minister of Information and Communications Technologies,
Higher education, technology and innovation, Anura Dissanayake, secretary of the
Ministry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovations, Prof.K.K.C.K Perera,
Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa and Liang Yi, Huawei Technologies
The CEO of Lanka attended the signing ceremony for the MOU.
Speaking
Minister Dr Bandula Gunawardena said at the ceremony: “Our priority will be
produce globally recognized “smart technocrats” who possess
internationally renowned qualifications required by local authorities and
international labor markets. They will be the leaders of the future
world.”

maximize the use of information and communication technologies. »Minister
added.

remain globally competitive. I believe this action taken by Huawei and the University
of Moratuwa is a bold step taken towards massive social transformation and
create a culture of technological innovation, “said the secretary of the ministry
of higher education, technology and innovations, Anura Dissanayake.

went on to say that in the future all universities will be converted to Smart
Learning universities and necessary technical support will be provided by
government and will further take steps to start technological
faculties affiliated with universities to produce more technocrats to meet the
demands of the 21st century.
Vice
Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa Prof.K.K.C.K. Perera said that “like
the main technological university in Sri Lanka, we firmly believe that
advanced knowledge will create new opportunities and we are indeed delighted to
have signed this memorandum of understanding for the future development of our students in the future
and industry ready and to meet future demands of the Sri Lankan ICT industry
Lanka. Education is the key to supporting national digital transformation and
Sustainable development.”

The CEO of Huawei Technologies Lanka, said Mr. Liang Yi.

focuses on three priorities: connectivity, applications and skills ”
added that in terms of connectivity, Huawei will continue to reduce the
barriers in terms of costs and coverage by technological innovation, and
terms of applications, Huawei will strengthen the ecosystem and help developers
create more apps for different communities and industries. Further in
terms of jurisdiction, Huawei will work with governments, local communities and others
to increase awareness of digital skills and provide the necessary assistance.
According to
to the memorandum of understanding, Huawei will soon open a joint innovation laboratory with the University
Moratuwa which will facilitate undergraduate and graduate research,
provide a platform to develop solutions and products for industrial needs and
organize certification courses on advanced ICT technologies. more
this will further strengthen current commitments such as industrial training
offered to students and to the Seeds for the Future program that Huawei launched in
2016.
Further
Huawei’s global experts will be sent to the University of Moratuwa and
support the establishment of professional technical certification. the
training project aims to provide high quality ICT talent to Sri Lanka and
South Asian region to meet the changing demands and challenges of
ICT industry.
In
Sri Lanka Huawei has been operating since 1998 and has extensive and in-depth
cooperation with major local telecommunications operators, governments and industry
customers. Over the years, Huawei has continued to promote the development of
the ICT talent ecosystem in Sri Lanka through activities such as Huawei
Seeds for the Future program, launched in 2016 and offering an internship
for talented young people and industrial training ICT Skills.
