MUNICH, May 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei unveiled the 2023 OlympusMons Challenges and the winners of the 2022 OlympusMons Awards at the 2023 Innovative Data Infrastructure Forum (IDI Forum), aiming to inspire scientists around the world to solve the technical problems of data storage.
Technological innovation requires theoretical breakthroughs, as well as inventions, prototypes and technological applications, all of which depend on collaboration between industry, academic communities and research institutions. Huawei has announced the OlympusMons challenges for four consecutive years, helping to guide research in the field of global data storage. By overcoming major technical challenges, Huawei intends to put high-level scientific research into practice and lead to win-win collaboration.
Teacher At Onur Mutlu team at ETH Zürichwhich won the 2022 OlympusMons Awards, investigated data-centric converged storage and computing network systems, developing innovative adaptive optimization algorithms that accelerate storage architecture upgrade.
At this summit, Huawei announced two major challenges for the 2023 OlympusMons Awards: storage with ultimate efficiency per bit, and data resilience and services geared towards multi-cloud environments. Huawei hopes to work with the academic community to build high-quality data storage systems that feature data-centric storage architecture, efficient data utilization and governance technologies for new applications, data resiliency and proactive protections.
Joan Serra-Sagristà, professor of the Department of Information and Communications Engineering, Autonomous University of Barcelona, introduced the third Global Data Compression Competition (GDCC), co-hosted by the university and Huawei, inviting software engineers, researchers, students and enthusiasts to participate. The competition will include eight major challenges dedicated to the lossless compression algorithm, with €171,000 total prize money having been set aside. Individuals and teams that achieve the highest compression rates and performance will be declared the winners.
Dr. Cheng Zhuo, Chief Technical Research Expert at Huawei Data Storage, delivered a keynote speech at the event, titled “Innovations Toward Next-Generation Storage Architecture,” noting that as enterprises are digitizing at an accelerated pace, data storage innovation will continue in six key areas: capacity, performance and reliability, efficiency, resiliency, and the multi-cloud ecosystem.
The development of the data storage industry requires widespread collaboration, and Huawei Data Storage will continue to work with industry and academia to develop the smart, digital and sustainable solutions of tomorrow.
