New updates are added at the bottom of this story…
The original story (published October 30, 2021) follows:
Last year, Huawei sold its Honor sub-brand after the former was blacklisted by the United States. The company is now directly owned and controlled by the Chinese government.
While this came as a surprise to many, it meant Honor could still sell smartphones in the US and use Qualcomm hardware and Google software.
That said, in this tracker, we’ll be keeping an eye out for the upcoming EMUI 12 update for Huawei phones and Magic UI 5.0 update for Honor smartphones.
EMUI 12 tracking
Even after the United States banned Huawei in 2019, the Chinese company remains one of the biggest smartphone makers. Since they can no longer use Google’s Android, Huawei switched to its own operating system known as Harmony OS.
However, Huawei is not yet done with its Android skin, EMUI. The company recently released EMUI 12 bringing much-needed UI customizations and upgrades.
Huawei said the new version of EMUI will roll out to devices in the first half of 2022 with phone update plans dating back to 2018. The announcement was made during the APAC product launch on YouTube on October 28.
The live stream also revealed which phones will get the EMUI 12 update. Huawei’s latest UI focuses on a cleaner and minimalist user interface while the Device+ feature focuses on tight integration of Huawei products.
Huawei has also overhauled Quick Settings and introduced what it calls the “Control Panel” which will allow users to access everything with just a swipe. Another notable feature that the upgrade will bring is Huawei’s Distributed File System which will allow devices to share files seamlessly.
On that note, here is a list of eligible Huawei devices that will receive the update to EMUI 12.

Tracking Magic UI 5.0
After breaking with its parent company Huawei, Honor wanted to make a name for itself and distinguish the user interface of its smartphone. And it looks like the Shenzhen-based company is finally doing it.
Rumor has it that Honor is working on its own Android skin, Magic UI 5.0. The leak comes from popular digital chat station leakster. However, it is very unlikely that the new version will be based on Android 12 since the leak was made in April.
#DigitalChatStation Huawei’s next new phone is running Hongmeng OS, and Honor’s new phone is running MagicUI 5.0 based on the bottom layer of Android 11. Some models before Honor’s split have tested Hongmeng internally, but these are not quite good.

Honor recently released the Honor 50 and Honor 50 Lite, their first smartphones after its separation from Huawei. Unsurprisingly, the phones come with Google Mobile Services, allowing Honor to continue where it left off two years ago.
We will add the list of eligible devices or table once Honor confirms which devices will receive the update.
In the meantime, you can check our dedicated Magic UI 4.0 tracker to see which phones have received the update.
