While we’re still waiting for the follow-up to the Mate Xs, the company seems to be exploring the possibilities of making a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip competitor with a clamshell design. At least according to this design patent filed in April with the Chinese National Intellectual Property Office.
Looking at the image, the phone looks surprisingly like the Galaxy Z Flip with one exception – the external display is considerably larger and may be used for more than just notifications and the time. It takes the best part of the top half of the back panel where the cameras are positioned.
And since the renderings show no front-facing cameras, the external display will also serve as a viewfinder for selfies. This way the front design where the foldable screen sits will be clean without any cutouts or obstructions.
There are no pictures showing the handset closed on the side, so we don’t know if the manufacturer plans to leave a small gap between the two halves.
Either way, keep in mind that this is only a patent and there is no real evidence that Huawei is working on such a form factor. Not all patents reach the real world.
