Huawei’s Harmony operating system
Huawei presented the progress of Harmony OS, HMS, EMUI and HiLink at the developer conference. In addition, he called on partners and developers to work more actively and make these systems popular.
Specifically, Huawei has made rapid strides in the app ecosystem. Yu Chengdong announced at the developer conference that Harmony OS 2.0 will be an open-source platform. At the end of the year, the beta of smartphones will be released to developers, and he has promised that Huawei smartphones will fully run the Harmony system next year. Models equipped with EMUI 11 will be upgraded to the Harmony system in the future. Compared with 2019, registered developers in the HMS world increased by 98%, reaching 1.8 million.
Wang Chenglu, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Software Department, recalled that while many high-tech companies in China have entered the world’s top 500, it is very dangerous because there is no “ root ” in the mobile applications industry.
Huawei is aware of “rootless pain”. He therefore attaches great importance to ecological construction internally. One person from Huawei said Harmony’s strategic position is “ the foundation of the whole green platform of mainstream businesses. ” This person believes that exploring the 5G business model will definitely attract a lot of developers.
Xiaomi reaches its goal step by step
Compared to Huawei’s tragic and unpredictable atmosphere, Xiaomi’s developer conference this year is more like a “ grand military parade ”. We mean that it focuses on showcasing the achievements of black technology, smartphones and IoT, as well as Xiaomi’s massive investment in research and development. However, it must be admitted that this gives Huawei in this sense.

As the first player to enter IoT, Xiaomi said its IoT platform has connected more than 271 million smart devices. The progress in green building that Xiaomi revealed at this conference is all related to IoT.
Harmony OS vs. Xiaomi Vela
Against the Harmony benchmark, Xiaomi launched the IoT software platform – Xiaomi vela based on the open source embedded operating system NuttX at the Developer Conference. The difference between the two is that at present Xiaomi Vela is mainly suitable for IoT devices, such as watches, bracelets, speakers, etc. And Harmony OS is suitable for a wider range. In addition to IoT devices, it will also be carried on smartphones.
There have been rumors that major manufacturers such as Xiaomi will support the Harmony system. But now this is less likely from Xiaomi’s launch of Vela and other actions. At the developer conference, an R&D engineer from Xiaomi said that “the possibility for Xiaomi to passively access Harmony is very small”.
In addition, Xiaomi brought the Mi Miaoxiang development framework to the developers. It protects upper layer applications from the differences of the different underlying operating systems. Application developers can develop collaborative, cross-device applications. It allows apps to seamlessly switch between smartphones and TVs. The previously predicted MIUI 13 does not appear.
At Developer Conference 2020, ColorOS 11 launched by OPPO focuses on personalized creation, seamless experience and sensory invigorating. The OriginOS launched by VIVO mainly improves the design of the user interface.

The OPPO Developer Conference focuses on the integration of people, equipment and scenes. The theme of VIVO is “All Original”. This advocates the return to the original and the construction of an ecology from smartphones.

VIVO claims that its green IoT platform covers over 40 brands, over 60 categories and over 1,800 product models. In addition, VIVO also launched the connected car brand of Jovi InCar. In the development of IoT, OPPO seems to be slightly radical. Its founder, Mingyong Chen, previously said that in the era of integrating everything, there will be no more “pure” smartphone companies. Shi Yujian, senior vice president of VIVO, stressed the importance of creating an ecosystem for smartphones: “In the next 3 to 5 years, smartphones will remain the main and most irreplaceable gateway to the digital world.”
The market presents a high degree of uncertainty. We have entered the era of 5G. These and other factors are changing the market. Manufacturers of traditional smartphones are therefore adopting other forms. We mean that they don’t become pure smartphone makers.
