In October, during the Mobile BroadBand Forum 2022 in Bangkok, MDES, MHESI and Huawei co-launched a white paper on the development of digital talents in Thailand. The paper focuses on the digital divide in Thailand caused by the rapid growth of the digital economy. According to the white paper, the digital economy will increase its contribution to 30% of Thailand’s GDP by 2027. The white paper is the basis for the renewed collaboration that will lead to the development of the National Skills Development Master Plan in ICT, in line with the 5th Digital Development Master Plan (2022-2027).

Acting Captain Montree Munkong, Advisor to the Minister, Ministry of Digital Economy and Society said, “Today, Thailand continues to face digital inequality between urban and rural communities. Therefore, MDES thanks Huawei for hosting the 2022-2023 ICT Competition which is another step in cultivating a generation of qualified digital talents who are important for developing an inclusive, sustainable and high-quality digital ecosystem in Thailand.”

Teacher. Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation said: “The rapid digital transformation has resulted in a shortage of skilled digital workers. We urgently need to develop ICT skills and equip the younger generations with advanced ICT knowledge. Huawei will be the key private sector partner supporting the creating a skilled ICT workforce as well as elevating the ICT talent development policy to a national master plan, including organizing the 2022-2023 ICT competition to build our digital talent pool.”

Abel Deng, Chairman of Huawei’s Asia-Pacific Carrier Business Departmentsaid, “Nurturing talent is no longer the sole responsibility of government or academia. Instead, it requires long-term collaborative efforts between government, industry, academia and society. Therefore, for Huawei, as an enabler of digital transformation and contributing social value, we are committed to doing our part. By investing in digital talent development, we hope to foster a win-win and positive business ecosystem.

Thailand’s White Paper on Digital Talent Development, in collaboration with global consultancy Roland Berger, recommends a holistic five-point framework to close the digital talent gap in Thailand, with collaborative efforts from government, private sector and academia. This includes: 1) policy development, standardization and monitoring; 2) skills development; 3) career and job matching; 4) infrastructure development; and 5) funding and sponsorship.

Huawei has launched the ICT competition since 2015, which has benefited over 1,000 top Thai university students. This year, through the digital talent development program “Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 Thailand”, Huawei plans to sharpen the ICT knowledge of around 200 talented young people. This program will run from December 9, 2022 to March 2023, consisting of ICT competition training and exam certification until the award announcement and job fair.

Over the past few years, Huawei ASEAN Academy (Thailand) has helped develop more than 26,000 ICT personnel and partnered with 37 leading higher education institutions. Going forward, Huawei aims to train more than 10,000 digital youth in 2023 alone and continue to implement key suggestions made by the white paper in the coming years.

“Huawei hopes that this forum will promote the formulation of an ICT workforce development policy within the framework of the country’s master plan and that the launch of the 2022-2023 ICT competition will contribute to bridging the digital divide, connect Thailand with other countries and improve the ICT skills of Thai talent. This will create a sustainable future for the digital ecosystem to thrive, furthering Huawei’s mission “Grow in Thailand, Contribute to Thailand” concluded Deng.

Huawei is not new to developing ITC talent in Thailand. Last August, he organized his first Asia-Pacific Seeds for the Future program in Bangkok, during which young talents from 16 countries discovered Thailand while participating in an intense 15-day technology training camp. v
