Unlike many other Android handsets, turning off or restarting your Samsung Galaxy S20 is not as simple as holding down the side button. Instead, you will have to remap the button or try another option. Here are four ways to turn off or restart your phone.
Open the power menu using the side and volume keys
The easiest way to access the power menu of your Samsung Galaxy S20 is to hold the side and volume buttons down simultaneously for several seconds.
Once the power menu appears, press the “Shut Down” or “Restart” button.
If you chose to turn off your Galaxy S20, hold down the side button for a few seconds until the Samsung logo appears on the screen. Your handset will start up completely in one minute.
Reprogram the prolonged pressure behavior of the side button
As mentioned above, out of the box, pressing and holding the side button on the Galaxy S20 launches Bixby, not the power menu. You can reprogram the behavior of the side key by going to Settings> Advanced function> Side key.
Once you enter the side keys menu, select the “Power Off Menu” option.
Now when you long press the side button you will have the option to turn off or restart your handset.

Access the power menu via the quick panel
Samsung also offers a shortcut to the power menu from the smartphone’s quick panel. To access the shortcut, swipe down from the top of the Galaxy S20 screen to lower the notification panel. From there, select the Food icon in the upper right corner.
The Samsung power menu will now appear. Press the “Shutdown” or “Restart” button to perform the respective action.
If you chose to turn off your Galaxy S20, press and hold the side button until you see the Samsung logo. Release the key and wait 30 to 60 seconds for the phone to start.

Use Bixby to turn off or restart your phone
You may not find Samsung’s built-in voice assistant, Bixby, but you can use it to shut down and restart your Galaxy S20.
Start by launching Bixby. If you haven’t remapped the long press of the side button yet, you can press and hold for a second until the Bixby icon appears at the top of your screen. Alternatively, you can swipe up from the home screen to open the application drawer, then select the “Bixby” application to launch it.
The voice assistant is listening to you now (you may need to press the Bixby icon in the lower left corner if you have launched the application), you can now ask it to switch off or restart your handset by saying “Switch off my phone “or” Restart my handset “.
Bixby will confirm that you want to shut down or restart your Galaxy S20. Press the corresponding button or press the Bixby button again to voice your response.
Your smartphone will now shut down or restart. Keep the side button pressed until the Samsung logo appears to reactivate it.
