In holiday hiring news, Target and Walmart plan to add a total of 140,000 temporary workers for the upcoming holiday shopping season. But if you had a holiday job at Walmart last year and were planning to work there again this year, you shouldn’t necessarily count on it.

That’s because Walmart will only hire 40,000 workers this holiday season, far fewer than the 150,000 workers it hired for the holidays last year.

Meanwhile, Target plans to hire 100,000 seasonal employees for the holidays, the same number it hired for the 2021 shopping season.

Both companies announced their vacation hiring plans in late September. It is not known exactly when the vacation rental will begin. Target and Walmart say they will start hiring seasonal workers after their current employees have had a chance to set vacation shifts.

“We will begin, as usual, by offering overtime to current associates who want it,” Walmart said in its announcement. “After that, we will offer the opportunity to those who want to earn extra money by working on a temporary basis.”

Target’s seasonal job openings cover a variety of store and distribution center roles.

Store roles include cashiers; general managers; Starbucks bartenders; associates in the technology, style, grocery and beauty departments; general merchandise associates; and shelf stockers. These in-store positions will be trained to handle pickup and delivery orders.

Jobs at Target’s fulfillment centers include general warehouse workers, packagers, and fulfillment center and operations employees. These positions frequently require lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 60 pounds.

Starting salaries range from $15 to $24 an hour, Target says. On average, more than 30% of workers hired as seasonal workers stay on after the holiday season.

Walmart will hire temporary help in three categories:

  • Seasonal associates who work in the store and also for Walmart pickup and delivery services
  • Customer service associates who work in retailer customer call centers
  • full time truckers

Walmart does not have a company-wide minimum wage, but it says its average wage in the United States is over $17 an hour.
