A well hidden feature in macOS Catalina makes it easier to resize and organize your windows without having to move them awkwardly. Fortunately, it is easy to find and even easier to use. You can use it with any app that you have open and want to move, either on one side of your screen or on another screen entirely.
Here’s what you do:
- Move your mouse cursor to the upper left corner of your screen where the buttons are located to close, minimize and expand your application.
- Mouse over the green button, which manages the extension of your application in full screen. Do not click it, hover over it and wait for a few options to appear in a drop-down menu.
- The options will allow you to switch to full screen mode (which you can also do by pressing the green button once), move the application to the right or left of your current display or pull the application you use on another display (assuming you have one connected to your machine).
Truth be told, I discovered this feature by accident. Some of my colleagues were also taken by surprise, while others relied for a while on a third-party application called Moom, which has some of the same functionality now offered natively by macOS – another example of the famous Apple “Sherlocking” practice.
It’s nice to have similar functionality built into Catalina, but if you want even more flexibility and control over window management, I recommend checking out Moom. Fortunately, it still works if you’re using macOS Catalina. And if you’re still using macOS High Sierra and don’t want to upgrade yet, you won’t miss this feature if you download Moom.
