How Pixar Sold the Toy Story Idea to Tom Hanks – /Film

In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Tom Hanks spoke about the development of the first “Toy Story” film and how seeing his voice paired with a raw animatic gave him confidence in the project:

“They took a line from a movie I did for Disney called ‘Turner and Hooch’ where I was yelling at a dog and they animated Woody to that line, and it was on a loop, they did it. done again and again.”

Seeing your voice brought to life in a CG-animated character must be a surreal experience. Seeing the potential of using this burgeoning new style of animation to tell a story convinced Tom Hanks to join “Toy Story”. Hank continued:

“There were two things about it. One: it was like, I’m not sure what it is. The computer-generated animation itself had a hyper-realistic look to it, you know, but also the wedding of my outraged voice inside that outraged body of a toy was – I mean, it was undeniably awesome. So I was in from the get-go. They invited me in to kind of explain that strange amount unknown of something that may or may not work. And I said, “Well, that’s fine with me. Let’s do it!” And that’s how it all started.”
