Hopeful Conservative Mayor Campaigns Man Charged With Islamophobia

Conservatives have been accused of ignoring institutional Islamophobia in their ranks after the party’s candidate for mayor of London was shown in the campaign alongside a local activist under investigation for Islamophobic comments.

A photo posted on Twitter in January shows Shaun Bailey campaigning with Sushil Dokwal, who was a Conservative councilor in London’s Brent North constituency in 2018, and two other men.

In November 2019, Sky News unveiled that Mr. Dokwal had posted a message in the WhatsApp group of the Brent North Conservative Association saying: “Sadiq and Corbin [sic] are against Jews, Hindus and follow the hidden jihadist agenda. “

Dokwal also used WhatsApp’s “forward” feature to send the Brent North group a video of Katie Hopkins in the middle of a pro-Pakistani protest, where far-right commentator claimed to be attacked and harassed by protesters Muslims.

The Muslim Council of Britain has said that the presence of Mr. Dokwal, who wears a Conservative Party badge, has shown that the party does not take Islamophobia seriously in its ranks.

“What is particularly problematic, beyond Mr. Dokwal’s appalling comments, is that rather than suspending the individual, the Conservative Party allows him to continue his campaign, mocking the Party’s demands for quick action and “zero tolerance” to racism. “said his spokesperson.

At the time, local and national conservative parties said they were investigating the matter.

After its electoral victory in December, the Conservative Party launched an investigation into Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice within the party, following repeated calls for such action.

When asked about the steps taken following the initial investigation into Mr. Dokwal, a Conservative spokesperson told Sky News: “We cannot comment on the investigations under way.”

Jayanti Patel, president of the Brent North Conservative Association, said, “We cannot comment on the ongoing investigation by the Conservative Party.”

The Muslim Council of Britain, which had criticized the decision to expand the scope of the investigation to include all forms of prejudice, said the latest news showed that the party’s review should be completely independent.

“The Party is faced with an institutional problem that it must recognize and resolve – and nothing less than an independent external investigation into Islamophobia will not be enough,” said his spokesman.

The Muslim Council of Britain has also expressed concern over the record of Shaun Bailey, who will run for mayor of London in the May 2020 elections.

“Shaun Bailey has, in the past, been mired in numerous Islamophobia scandals, from sharing a tweet labeling Sadiq Khan” the mad mullah of Londonistan “to the charge of having told a conservative Muslim candidate of “suck him” when he raised the issue of discrimination, “said his spokesperson.

“Unfortunately, it is not surprising that he is campaigning with an individual who links Khan to the jihadists because of his religion.”

A Bailey spokesperson told Sky News, “Shaun Bailey does not know this person and was completely unaware of these comments or any investigation.

“Shaun cannot personally control everyone who shows up at volunteer sessions in London. He does not endorse comments highlighted by Sky News in any way.”

Mr. Dokwal did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

At the time of his previous comments, he replied on WhatsApp, saying: “It was published to me and I sent it to my colleague to find out what’s going on. If that’s true, then study it and maybe learn from it. “

On Monday, the Conservative Party suspended a number of its members following allegations by the campaign group Hope Not Hate, which had compiled a file of anti-Muslim comments online.

During the general election, many messages accusing Labor of being “anti-Indian and anti-Hindu” and “a spokesperson for Pakistan” went viral on WhatsApp, prompting Labor candidates to warn that the application of cat played a role in the food division.

In last year’s Indian elections, WhatsApp was used as a vehicle for disinformation and propaganda, with polarizing political information and rumors spreading rapidly through transmission to groups.

The Facebook-owned application responded by limiting the frequency of message transmission – to only five groups instead of 20. It then extended this restriction worldwide.

A WhatsApp spokesperson told Sky News: “WhatsApp is absolutely committed to helping tackle the problem of viral misinformation … we will continue to prioritize the development of new ways to help solve this problem. to come up.”
