Foldable smartphones have been popular for quite some time and many companies are trying to make the most of them. The latest to join this list is Honor. There are reports that Honor is apparently working on its own foldable smartphone, the Honor Magic Fold, after parting ways with Huawei earlier this year. Considering that Xiaomi just released the Mi Mix Fold and Google is reportedly working on a foldable device as well, it’s no surprise that Honor wants to try this, too. Oppo is another company that is also working on a foldable device, and reports say Samsung is providing panels to Oppo. However, we don’t know anything more about Oppo’s plans at this time.
A report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) indicates that the Honor Magic Fold will feature foldable panels from BOE and Visionox. However, there is no further information on this subject. Honor CEO George Zhao told CNET in 2018 that Honor intended to release a foldable phone in the future, but the “cost was prohibitive.” Zhao had, at that time, suggested that the device could be launched in 2020. “For Honor, I think we’ll find a way to ensure that our target customer can have a foldable phone. I think next year; next year… should be the time, ”Zhao said. Given the current situation, it is quite possible that the delay in the manufacturing and design process due to the ongoing pandemic has pushed Honor’s plans back to 2021.
As the XDA developers point out, the “best part” of the Honor Magic Fold will be that it should be “completely unused” by the US government when it launches. Honor will launch a smartphone with a Qualcomm 5G chip, which Huawei cannot do, and the next Honor device will also have Google Mobile Services preinstalled in the West.

But, it is possible that there will not be a Western release anytime soon since most of the companies based in China are launching their products first in their home country and to the world, later. Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold has yet to launch outside the country.
