Halloween lovers, rejoice, because “Hocus Pocus 2” is finally here. Luckily for fans of the original, the film pays homage to the original 1993 classic in several ways, with references to everything from memorable characters to beloved objects like Winifred Sanderson’s famous spell book.
The original “Hocus Pocus” stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, a trio of accidentally resurrected witches in Salem, MA. The sequel picks up 29 years after the original ended, with Midler, Parker, and Najimy all reprising their roles, along with Doug Jones as Winifred’s undead ex, Billy Butcherson. Once again the story begins with a group of young people accidentally resurrecting witches. This time, instead of Dani and Max Dennison, the resurrected are Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo).
‘Hocus Pocus’ director Kenny Ortega did not return for the sequel; instead, Anne Fletcher led the project. Some fans were initially worried about Ortega’s departure, fearing the sequel wouldn’t be a worthy successor – but one thing is undeniable: the new ‘Hocus Pocus 2’ is packed full of tips and tricks for fans old and new alike.
“Hocus Pocus 2” is now streaming on Disney+. Ahead, check out some of the original’s Wizarding Easter Eggs scattered throughout.
