Harry Kane’s performance in Bayern Munich’s defeat to Bayer Leverkusen has been labeled a “disaster” by German media.
Kane and Bayern’s Bundesliga title hopes were seriously dented with a 3-0 defeat to top-of-the-table Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso’s side are now five points clear and remain unbeaten this season as they look to end the Bavarian club’s decade-long dominance.
It wasn’t Kane’s best performance for Bayern as he managed just 18 touches and had just one shot in the entire match.
The German newspaper BILD headlined: “The Kane Disaster”. The report added that his performance was a “disaster” before later stating that it was his worst performance in a Bayern shirt.
He continued: “Kane was not in the game at all. No goal, no assist – BILD grade 6!
“Only his effort was right: he ran 10.8 km, only Mazraoui ran more for Bayern.
“He should win the top scorer cannon. But he came to Bayern to win championships…”
Kane did not lose hope of winning the first piece of silverware of his career and fought on.
He told Sky Sports: “We didn’t play well with the ball. I thought there was pressure, especially in the first half and even in the second half we pressed them well, but every time we got it back we gave it right back to them.
“This allowed them to gain momentum. In the last third, we were not good in the duels, we were not good in the duels, the final performance was not there today, so a really disappointing day with the ball.
“We are five points behind now but there are still many games to play. This one hurts, we wanted a different result, but we have to focus on the Champions League first and obviously the next game.
“There are a lot of games to play and we have to try to win as many points as possible, as quickly as possible.”
As for whether Bayern were now underdogs, Kane added: “It’s not for us to decide. It’s up to everyone to decide.
“For us, we have to focus on ourselves, we have to improve, we have to improve. We know that. The games are coming at high speed, so we need to turn things around quickly.
Next up for Bayern is a trip to Lazio in the Champions League on Tuesday.
