Bergevin Lane Vineyards She-Devil Syrah 2016
Rich, flavorful and mellow in texture, this is a ripe New World Syrah with an earthy accent. The flavors of black fruits give way to mushrooms and cocoa on a sweet-ripe finish with supple tannins. Alcohol by volume: 14.6 percent.

Union Sacred Belle de Nuit Gewurztraminer 2019
This is not your grandmother’s gewurz. Winemaker Xavier Arnaudin harvests early to avoid the soft, alcoholic wine the grape can give when it’s overripe, then he adds a bit of texture by fermenting the grapes on their skins. The result is a dry, refreshing wine that resembles a pale rosé with understated floral aromas of rose hips and lychees. ABV: 12.8 percent.

Langlois Brut Crémant de Loire
Loire Valley, France, $ 22
From the same owners as the famous Bollinger champagne house, the Château de Langlois produces fine champagne that approaches the quality of champagne. It’s not the rich style that Bolly fans might recognize, but it’s a crisp, refreshing sparkling wine with impressive depth. ABV: 12.5 percent.

GREAT VALUE
Paris Valley Road Founder’s Blend 2018
The Paris Valley Road winery is in Paso Robles, and this wine has some of the character of Paso, although the California designation suggests that at least some of the wine comes from elsewhere in the state. Aromas and flavors of black cherries, plums and black pepper linger through a strong finish. There is also an appealing earthy element, although the wine remains oriented towards its fruit. ABV: 14.5 percent.

GREAT VALUE
Fred barbera
Piedmont, Italy, $ 30 for a three-liter can
Here is another great value everyday wine in the box format. That’s the equivalent of four bottles at $ 7.50. The wine is medium-bodied, with tart cherries and an attractive floral aspect that you wouldn’t normally expect at this price. It is quite dry and refreshing, characteristic of the friendly barbera grape. Well done! (Reminder: when you are done with the wine, tear the bag from inside the box, throw it in the trash, and recycle the cardboard box. Then go buy more.) ABV: 13.5 percent.
