Grilled oranges with cardamom

The Washington PostDemocracy dies in darkness

By Ellie Krieger

You’ve probably had a grilled grapefruit before, so why not give an orange the same luscious treatment? In this quick and healthy dessert, sweet orange halves are spread with a mixture of honey and ground cardamom, then toasted until bubbly and golden. Each is then served with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream, an extra sprinkle of cardamom and a little fresh mint for a delicious and fragrant dessert. The fruit becomes juicier under the grill, its heat and caramelized top contrasting with the ice cream.

  1. Step 1

If your grill is above your oven, place a rack about 6 inches from the element. Preheat grill to HIGH.

  2. 2nd step

Cut the oranges in half crosswise, then cut a small slice off the bottom of each so that it lies flat on a cutting board. As you would half a grapefruit, cut a circle around the flesh of each orange half, separating it from the peel, then cut around each orange segment to loosen it from the membrane. Place the oranges on a large baking sheet.

  3. Step 3

In a small bowl, whisk together the honey and cardamom. Drizzle the orange halves evenly with the honey mixture, spreading it over each with the back of a spoon.

  4. Step 4

Transfer the oranges to the oven and roast for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the oranges are hot and the top is bubbly and nicely browned in spots.

  5. Step 5

Let the oranges cool slightly, then cover each half with a small scoop of ice cream (1 heaped tablespoon), garnish with a light sprinkling of ground cardamom and mint leaves, and serve.
