Google search results add subject filters as part of carousel redesign – 9to5Google

In addition to continuous scrolling on desktop, Google is rolling out new topic filters for mobile search.

It starts with a redesign of the carousel under the search bar that uses pill-shaped buttons accompanied by blue icons. Books, Finances, Flights, Images, Maps, News, Shopping, and Videos have corresponding icons, with Google tending to display one or two of these traditional filters first.

Additionally, Google now surfaces related topics to “help you dig deeper or discover something new about a specific topic.”

You can add or remove topics, which are denoted by a + symbol, to quickly zoom in or back out of a search.

Searching for “Pixel 7” will return topics such as “Reviews” and “Details”, although the “Shopping” and “News” filters are always displayed first. When you add a topic, the search results feed quickly updates. Scrolling all the way to the right gets you an “All Filters” list and “Tools” like time and results.

The company says “topics and filters are displayed in the order our systems automatically determine to be most useful for your specific query.”

For example, if you search for “dinner ideas”, you may see topics such as “healthy” or “easy”. Tapping on a topic adds it to your query, helping you quickly narrow your search results with less typing. Topics are dynamic and will change as you tap on them, giving you more options and helping you explore new areas. For example, if you tap on “healthy”, you might see “vegetarian” or “fast” appear next.

These theme filters are rolling out to English-speaking users in the US on the Google app for Android and iOS, as well as mobile search.
