In 2020, Evans released his soulful debut EP, Take time, featuring the single “Heartbreak Anniversary,” which was nominated for a Grammy last year. Appearances on Drake’s hit “Chicago Freestyle” and Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” followed. Now, Evans is gearing up to release his first full-length album, which he says will provide a window into his world since his meteoric rise. “It’s about what it’s like to go through romance and life in general with this newfound attention,” he explains. “It’s about me trying to figure out who I can trust and what’s authentic.” For this issue, the 26-year-old Long Beach, Calif. native curated a playlist around the theme of joy by selecting songs he associates with bright, warm colors. In addition to Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness,” Evans included Kanye West’s “Good Life” for the nostalgia it induces; “The Beach”, a Take time track he describes as his “local anthem”; and Calvin Harris’ “Slide,” featuring Frank Ocean and Migos. “It came out over the summer when I was a waiter at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company,” he says of Harris’ song. “I was like, ‘Yo, I got a job! Life is good!’ ”
