It was the cliffhanger question that haunted Ghosts fans all summer: Could Jay see the spirits of Woodstone Mansion after falling through the floor and hitting his head?

After all, when his wife Sam tripped down the stairs in the series pilot, she woke up with this very special ability. So Jay was wondering the same thing in the Season 2 premiere when he regained consciousness and started running excitedly around the property while calling out the names of the ghosts. Alas, after a fake-out, it was revealed that Jay had not got to see his best friend Pete, No Pants & Co.
“I felt like it was going to be too much of a groundbreaking development,” co-showrunner Joe Wiseman told TVLine of the decision not to empower Jay. “We’re only 18 episodes into the first season, and it seems like it’s Sam’s thing, and it’s his thing that he kind of has to deal with like this guy who’s not aware of what is happening. We just don’t want to blow it all up yet.
Co-showrunner Joe Port also points out the uniqueness of Sam’s ability and his desire not to take it away. “I know we’re a TV show, but that seems like a very TV direction to go, I guess,” Port says. “I didn’t mind the fake head in that direction, but it seems like Sam’s power is very rare. It doesn’t seem like it should happen to so many people who bump their heads. So I just thought that it would be too much for this to happen to two people in the same household.
When asked if it was too early in the show’s lifespan – he is only the second season – to take such a big twist, Port says, “Part of it is that too. But I also think he has that power that way, I don’t know if that’s a place to go. I am not sure.”
While the writers went in a different direction with Jay’s story, supernatural comedy “is the type of show where he could have is dead or he could have saw them for a little while,” Wiseman notes. “In our minds, it was a valid and fun cliffhanger, and then, finally, when we thought about it, we didn’t want to go there yet.”
Does this “still” mean that it’s possible Jay might see ghosts in the future? “I mean, nothing is ruled out,” Wiseman says.
