Shouts from New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson prevented a man from attempting to steal his vehicle last week in downtown New Orleans, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Benson was driving her vehicle and pulled up last Saturday around 2:13 p.m. when a man in a white Nissan Titan pulled up beside her and got into his vehicle, a statement from the NOPD said .
“The victim (Benson) ordered the subject to get out of his vehicle,” the statement said. “Subject exited the victim’s vehicle, entered the Nissan Titan and fled the scene.”
Benson then called the police.
The NOPD did not identify the victim as Benson, but Saints spokesman Greg Bensel did so on Friday.
“I can confirm that an incident occurred involving Ms. Benson while she was in her vehicle,” Bensel said. “While she was very shaken at the time, she was unharmed and doing well. She wanted to send her sincere gratitude to the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department who responded so quickly and professionally.
Bensel said he could not have any further comment as the incident was under investigation.
Benson became the primary owner of the Saints and Pelicans of New Orleans after the death of her husband, Tom Benson, in 2018.
