Gasly and AlphaTauri played in qualifying for the opening of the F1 season, with the Frenchman starting fifth behind Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and ahead of McLaren drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris.
Gasly’s rookie teammate Yuki Tsunoda also showed flashes of speed, but missed a spot in Q3.
AlphaTauri’s qualifying pace has given Gasly confidence that the Faenza-based side will be in the mix as the midfielder for the entire 2021 season.
“I think [with] the pace that we’ve been showing all weekend, we’re in the mix with the Ferrari and the McLaren and that’s the positive, ”Gasly said. I think we are clearly going to fight with them and on all tracks. “
While Tsunoda impressed on his debut dropping from 13th to ninth in the race, passing Lance Stroll on the last lap of the race, Gasly’s race was ruined in the first lap when he hit Ricciardo’s back. and had to fight for a new Front Wing.

Gasly, who eventually retired from the race with new damage, was disappointed that AlphaTauri’s promising pace had not been converted into a large number of points.
“When I got in touch with the McLaren, the race was pretty much over,” Gasly continued.
“I broke the front wing, damaged the ground and then that was about it. We had other problems towards the end of the race which meant we had to abandon the car.
“Obviously I’m very disappointed because there was a good fight with the Ferrari and the McLaren. We missed some good points.”
Gasly believes AlphaTauri’s improved form, which is expected to be bolstered by gradual upgrades leading up to the Spanish Grand Prix in May, is also encouraged by what lies ahead for the team, starting with the GP of Emilia Romagna next week in Imola.
“Looking at the positives, I think all weekend we showed a very strong pace in qualifying, the long race on Friday looked solid and I think we would have been in the fight with the Ferrari and the McLaren. “, he added.
“It didn’t happen, so now we just have to keep doing our job and focus on the next one and make sure we get the points there.
“I’m sure we’ll be back to fight with them for the next ones.”
