Gary Neville has taken angrily to the Glazer family after it emerged Manchester United owners are considering selling a stake to US investment fund Apollo.
The New York-based private equity group was in talks with the Glazers to take a minority stake in the club.
Talks between the Glazers and Apollo are ongoing, but the latter is eager to see how much they would receive for their actions, given that no new money is expected to be used in the future.
Taking to Twitter on Friday, Neville wrote: “If the reports are true that the Glazer family is ready to sell in part before a full sale, it is totally unacceptable that it is to a US investment fund.
“Apollo has been mentioned but they need to know they won’t be welcome in Manchester.”
He continued: “The American model of sports ownership is about meaningful return on investment (at all costs, that is, Super League and Big Picture).
“The ownership model in England needs to change and American money is a bigger danger to that than any other international money. We need a regulator ASAP!
It will be a blow to United fans who continue to protest against the family.
Supporters were hoping for a further injection of cash into the club, with Old Trafford and Carrington training ground in need of an overhaul, and a host of new players being brought into the club.
Neville’s comments about American money being the biggest danger to English football seem controversial.
Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry and Tom Werner, have been a revelation on Merseyside since acquiring the club.
However, it was not all smooth sailing at Anfield, with the decisions being overturned following fan backlash.
They have, however, renovated Anfield and contributed to the success of the Champions League and the Premier League.
Joel and Avram Glazer have no interest in giving up their day-to-day control of United, but other family members Kevin, Bryan, Darcie and Edward Glazer are willing to part ways, depending on how much they receive for the shares .
British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed interest in the club, with further protests expected on Monday ahead of the clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
As the problems continue off the pitch, they also continue, with United losing 2-1 at home to Brighton in their first game of the season, before suffering a 4-0 thrashing at Brentford.
