Gareth Southgate urged to give Phil Foden key role opposite Jude Bellingham as Carlo Ancelotti gives honest performance assessment

Gareth Southgate has been asked to play Phil Foden ahead of Jude Bellingham in attacking midfield ahead of Euro 2024.

It follows a lackluster performance against Bayern Munich in the Champions League where the Real Madrid superstar had to be taken off after 75 minutes on Tuesday evening.

Bellingham had a tough night against Bayern and were eliminated in the 75th minute.

Even Real boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted Bellingham had a tough night as talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara insisted Foden should be in front of him behind the striker.

Speaking to Jason Cundy on talkSPORT, O’Hara said: “Bellingham, what I’ve watched in the last few Champions League games, he’s been very quiet, hasn’t he?

“Phil Foden, for me, is absolutely tearing it up. We keep talking about Bellingham as the No.10 for England.

“But Phil Foden has that shirt, doesn’t he? [Southgate] still going to play Bellingham but you have to change where you play.

Manchester City’s Foden has had a fine campaign and is on course to win the PFA Player of the Year award, having scored 23 goals and assisted ten in all competitions.

Bellingham, meanwhile, made little impact against Bayern Munich and had to be taken off 15 minutes before the end of the match, with Ancelotti insisting he was suffering from cramps.

The legendary Italian said: “Jude Bellingham wasn’t at his best tonight, but that’s the same for the whole team.”

“Bellingham cramped after 60 minutes so I had to substitute him.”

Southgate will have an important decision to make this summer

The 20-year-old has been in sensational form this season, so much so that former Real Madrid star Steve McManaman ranked him higher than three Galacticos in terms of immediate impact.

In 37 matches this season, the former Borussia Dortmund and Birmingham midfielder has scored 21 times and provided ten assists – but was unable to contribute against Bayern.

And this is not his first misfortune against Munich, after failing to win in nine matches against the German giants, with two draws and seven defeats.

Bellingham tried to make an impact on the match as they looked to deny Harry Kane before taking their penalty in the second half.

His fellow Englishman remained unmoved, however, heading home to give Bayern the lead before Vinicius Jr scored his own penalty to make it 2-2.

Kane reacted to the incident after the match, which could make for an awkward reunion at Euro 2024 when they join England.

Speaking after the match, the 30-year-old said: “To be honest, I don’t know what he was saying. He was mumbling… I would have to ask him what he said.

“Once I’m in that moment, I’m in that zone and I block everything out but I’m sure he was saying something to try to put me off! Luckily I was okay with that.”
