TOPEKA (KSNT) — Highland Park men’s basketball finished with an impressive 18-5 record last season, but it ended in the first round of the 5A State Tournament.

“Very disappointing because I feel like we didn’t get where we wanted to go so we’re going to make up for it this year,” said Highland Park striker Jahmir Kingcannon.

How is this team catching up? A county championship. With several top-flight athletes on the team, that goal is not out of place.

“Our starting five actually,” Kingcannon said when asked who all of the team can dunk.

Star footballer Tre Richardson swaps cleats for sneakers. After a great football season, he didn’t know if he would play basketball, but he’s back on the court.

“Coach Mike asked me, told me I should come out because this is the year we should win the state,” Richardson said. “Then I might as well go out.”

Additionally, Highland Park has Ketraleus “Bo” Aldridge, who has several Division I basketball scholarship deals under his belt.

“Probably one of the best players in the state, if not the best,” said head coach Mike Williams. “Just crazy talent, he makes me look good. Even when I don’t look good.

Highland Park makes it clear that it’s not just about its athleticism, however.

“When I first came here I had people saying to me, ‘You know Mike, these guys can’t play. They won’t remember the games. They’re athletes, you might just have to shut up and let them go,’ and I didn’t believe it,” Williams said. “…I think everyone knows the athleticism that Highland Park brings to the table…they bring a level of IQ, which kicks that level of athleticism up a notch.”

Players may also feel that their game has increased.

“Without IQ, you can’t really play basketball properly, so we’ve all increased our IQ, and that makes us a better team overall,” Kingcannon said.

Highland Park begins its season Tuesday against Bonner Springs.

Full Court Press, the Friday high school basketball show on 27 News, begins Friday.
