Frank Warren told talkSPORT that “ the only way ” Anthony Joshua vs. Tyson Fury can actually happen now is to find a deal on the site that meets the financial demands of both fighters.
The Hall of Fame promoter, who works with Fury, expressed dismay last month when AJ Rep Eddie Hearn publicly said contracts had been signed for the fight deal.
Warren insists the announcement was premature, as the whole deal hinges on getting a deal done on the site.
A 30-day period was initially set for the parties to collect proposals and set the date and location, but time is running out.
Warren told White and Jordan on talkSPORT: “The last time we spoke I said it was premature to announce it.
“I didn’t see the point in announcing that something had been signed unless you have the date and place.
“I live in hope – the conversations that have taken place over the last month or so – I hope they will soon lead to some sort of announcement.
“But I keep saying it every time we speak, until we get it, get some signatures [on the site deal] it doesn’t mean anything.
“We are therefore waiting for the offer and for it to be confirmed in writing …
“Hopefully we can all get what everyone else wants, but like I’ve said all the time, the times we’re with COVID and all the implications make it very difficult.
“Everyone is working to make it happen.
“I know what everyone wants to hear, but I don’t want to tell people what they want to hear, I want to say to them, ‘This is what is happening.'”
Warren went on to explain that the host nation’s financial offer in the site deal must satisfy the fighters in order to actually finalize the contest.
He continued, “The only way that will happen is by meeting their financial demands.
“This is the only way the fight is going to take place. They have to make a business decision.
“If what we’re trying to do doesn’t work, then, ‘This is plan A, this is plan B, do you want it or not?”
“It’s their decision.”
When told that fighters surely couldn’t win more in any other fight, Warren said, “I don’t think so. And at the end of the day, it’s only worth what it’s worth …
“It might not happen for all four belts if it doesn’t happen now and it could fragment.
“Maybe someone can get off the belts rather than get involved in the mandates, so who knows?”
“If it’s going to happen for all four belts, it has to happen now. It’s that simple.
“I am optimistic and I hope that will be the case. We just hope that we will have some positive news in the coming days. “
