Charlie Austin has left Australian side Brisbane Roar after just six months and is returning to the UK.

The 33-year-old joined the A-League club on a ‘multi-year’ contract, having left Queens Park Rangers at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Austin has made headlines while plying his trade, not only complaining about Australian television, but claiming that the Hobnobs are better than the TimTams.

The former QPR and Southampton striker has since taken Twitter to confirm that he will leave the Australian club for “family reasons”.

In a post he said: “The management, guys and fans have been fantastic and have always supported me even during my deliberations to return home. I loved the A-League and hope it will continue to grow, family first, football second.

During his time with Brisbane Roar, Austin scored twice in six appearances for the side.

When drawn to the subject this week, Chris Fong, Roar’s president, didn’t offer any answers on Austin’s future, but said the club will be targeting a forward in January.

“We are focused on strengthening our attacking line-up in the January window,” he said.

“If Charlie is part of that, I’m not sure, but I understand that discussions are ongoing as there are wider implications at play, particularly non-club related.

“Charlie is a stand-up person, and wherever we land it will be in the best interests of the club and Charlie.”

It’s a blow for the Australian team who hoped to keep hold of the experienced striker.

Brisbane are currently 10th in the table, three points behind Sydney FC in the playoffs.
