It’s the end of the professional career of a former NBA champion.
Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Jodie Meeks told reporters this week that he had “officially retired” from professional ball. Meeks is competing for Team USA at the FIBA AmeriCup tournament in Brazil, but as a last hurray of sorts.
“I’m young, but in basketball I’m a little older,” Meeks said, according to USA Basketball writer Steve Drumwright. “I am no longer a spring chicken. But it is okay. I can still move, I still feel like I can still play. And obviously I’m doing well here. So for my career, it’s definitely a good one and it will be the icing on the cake.
Meeks, who recently turned 35, also revealed he is now joining New Orleans Pelicans’ G League affiliate Birmingham Squadron as an assistant coach.
The former Kentucky star Meeks played in the NBA for 11 years. He posted career-best numbers with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers from 2012 to 2014, averaging 11.8 points per game as a knockdown three-point shooter. Meeks went on to win an NBA title with the Toronto Raptors in 2019.
While Meeks has had plenty of highlights in his career (not all of them great), he is now moving on to his next chapter as a G League manager.
