Gutierrez, who raced for Sauber in 2013-14 and Haas in 2016, will drive Inter Europol’s LMP2 ORECA-Gibson 07 alongside team regulars Alex Brundle and Kuba Smiechowski in all six rounds of the WEC.
The Mexican returns to active competition for the first time since 2017 after four seasons focused on his roles with Mercedes, straddling F1 and Formula E.
He replaces Renger van de Zande, who teamed up with Brundle and Smiechowski at WEC last year.
Gutierrez, 30, said: “It is an honor for me to resume racing in this competitive and prestigious series.
“Endurance racing is a new challenge for me, [so] I will focus on learning as much as possible and as soon as possible.
“Thanks to the team for the opportunity to have me run with Kuba Smiechowski and Alex Brundle: with the progress of the team and our combined ambition, I have no doubts that we will make a great team.”

Team manager Sascha Fassbender added: “With Esteban in the team, we have a strong team to achieve our ambitions.
“I can’t wait to work together to accomplish great things this season.”
Brundle, who signed a new two-year deal with Euro Interpol late last year, called the hiring of Gutierrez “a testament to the strength of the team”.
Gutierrez was scheduled to enter the ranks of the P2 prototypes for the 2018/19 WEC Super-Season with the DragonSpeed team.
He was announced as the American competitor’s P2 ORECA driver, but made the late decision to retire before he was recruited by Mercedes.
Gutierrez was first involved in its simulator programs before becoming its official reserve for Mercedes.
He was appointed brand ambassador for the German automaker early last year after his superlicence expired.
A reserve and development role with its FE operation was added to its functions at the end of 2019.
The 30-year-old driver tested an ORECA P2 for Prema Powerteam late last year as he began to re-explore sports car options.
