The automobile industry has become a very complex global mechanism, which depends on hundreds and thousands of suppliers and satellite companies. All of this means that even if you buy a car that bears the Made in US label, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all of its components come from the United States. There is now a study that tracks which vehicles have the highest percentage of parts made in the United States. And the results for 2022 are in.
Like every previous year, the American University Kogod School of Business creates an index that reflects the Americanization of each vehicle in the US market. For 2022, the Lincoln Corsair leads the way with 72% of its components made in the United States or Canada and an engine made in the United States. The same result refers to both the standard combustion Corsair and the plug-in hybrid Corsair. Final assembly, engine production, and transmission production for both of these vehicles are all located in the United States.
Overall, many automakers have increased their US content over the past 12 months, the study finds. Compared to 2015 results, however, Stellantis (formerly FCA), Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen all saw lower results. Meanwhile, last year’s vehicle with the most U.S.-made components, the Ford Mustang, ranks 22nd for 2022 following the switch to a Mexican-made transmission.
Other notable results include Tesla’s strong result with 5 cars in the top 10, including the Model 3 Performance and Model Y (5th place), as well as the Model 3 Lond Range (2nd place). For comparison, in 2013, the first year Tesla was included in the study, the electric vehicle maker ranked 14th.
