Automakers spend a lot of money to bring a car to market, and that includes dissecting their competitors’ offerings. It’s no surprise to see competing makes and models test next to each other, although it’s rare to see them in public. New photos have captured a lone Ford Mustang Mach-E leaving General Motors Milford Proving Ground, and its presence shouldn’t raise too many eyebrows.

The photos are from GM Authority – check out the set of photos here – and it shows a white Mach-E loaded with test gear and yellow masking tape. According to the post, a white sticker on the rear bumper of the crossover identifies it as an internal benchmark vehicle. However, it is not clear from the photos why GM would even test such a vehicle. Is there preparing a direct competitor? As cool as that may be, we wouldn’t bet on what’s going on just yet.

GM has big plans for the next decade as it moves towards fully electric vehicles, and the electrified lineup includes a variety of vehicle types, including crossovers that could compete in the same segment as the Mustang Mach-E. GM variants may not have such an ionic nameplate behind the vehicle, although the new Ford is selling well enough to make it a formidable contender for newcomers that automakers would like to dethrone.

The automaker’s electrification efforts are set to ramp up as the GMC Hummer EV hits the road for the first time this month. Cadillac has the Lyriq coming up as we get our first look at the all-electric Chevy Silverado early next month. The company wants to hit more than a million electric vehicle sales by 2025 – and GM won’t do it with just a few trucks and a luxury crossover. GM will need to have a model lineup that will appeal to a broad customer base, and customers love their crossovers right now.
