Ford launched the third-generation Raptor in February with a turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a complete off-road makeover. While the company is yet to tell us how powerful the truck is, new spy photos of the even hotter Raptor R alongside the 702-horsepower (525-kilowatt) Ram TRX suggest the Fords pair might pack a punch. .
Car enthusiasts who bleed Castrol will be happy to know that the new truck has a V8 engine under the hood; as you may know by now, it will have the same 5.2-liter supercharged V8 – codename Predator – as the GT500 Mustang. While the pony car develops 760 horsepower (567 kilowatts), the power output of the Raptor R is bound to be in the same direction.
From the outside, it looks like the R variant looks a lot like the Raptor with minor modifications including a new grille and new wheels. Details remain scarce, but a closer look under the new beast also shows beefier trailing arms.
As you probably already know, the main purpose of the Raptor R is to compete with the Ram TRX in all considerable measures, including horsepower. A bold claim from the Blue Oval, as we wouldn’t be surprised to see an updated version of the TRX in the not-so-distant future.
Either way, the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor and Raptor R will be assembled at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan. The standard truck will be available this summer while the Model R is expected to go on sale in 2022.
