SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Do you need to jumpstart your weight loss? You may be able to do this by turning to the sea.
According to a study published in the journal Appetite, omega-3 fish oil can make you feel full and help increase your weight loss.
The researchers asked more than 200 overweight volunteers to follow a low-calorie diet for eight weeks. During the last two weeks of the diet, half of the participants received a low dose of fish oil, 260 mg, and half a higher dose, 1300 mg per day.
The researchers were able to measure feelings of hunger after the participants ate a meal. The group with the highest dose of fish oil had their hunger suppressed immediately after eating and two hours after eating. The low dose fish oil group did not. Researchers concluded that having fish oil in addition to or while eating salmon, sardines, or other oily fish can help you feel full and eat fewer calories.
Further research is needed to confirm these results. In the meantime, if you are considering taking a fish oil supplement, be sure to see your doctor first.
