Barcelona defender Sergino Dest faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou.
The 21-year-old hasn’t managed to carve out a starting spot in almost 18 months since joining the Catalan giants. Although he played regularly under Ronald Koeman, the right-back was never convincing enough.
But with Xavi Hernandez taking over, the USMNT ace has fallen down the pecking order. Indeed, the 41-year-old preferred Dani Alves, Oscar Mingueza and even Ronald Araujo at right-back ahead of Dest, giving an indication of where the former Ajax ace sits in the order of preference.
Thus, a sale in the current transfer window could very well be considered, with SER padlock reporting that up to five Champions League clubs are pursuing his signing.
Although the report did not specify the names of the teams interested, the 21-year-old right-back has been heavily linked with Bayern Munich for some time now, while Chelsea are also among the suitors, with the Premier League side looking for the wingers.
Atletico Madrid have also been mentioned as an interested party, as they scour the market to replace Kieran Trippier, who left for Newcastle United.
However, according to the report, Dest has no intention of leaving Camp Nou at this stage and wants to prove himself at the club.
The former Ajax starlet had to deal with a back problem and having recovered from it, he is keen to claim a place in the team again. However, in case things do not improve in the next few weeks, a sale remains very likely.
Dest, so far this term, has featured 16 times in all competitions. He contributed with three assists in the process. But with Alves impressing strongly since his return, it remains to be seen whether the United States international can force his way back into Xavi’s plans.
