The investment in the studio was supported by stakeholders in the British film industry, including the British Film Institute (BFI).
Managing director Ben Roberts said: “There is so much untapped talent and opportunity across the country, which is why we welcome this positive news for the North East and the progress of Crown Studios today. Works that have the potential to transform the region, create jobs and support business.”
Alison Gwynn, managing director of film agency North East Screen, added: “The studios will provide the infrastructure we really need to continue the trajectory of attracting major, big-budget feature films and, in doing so, creating “Thousands of additional opportunities for people and businesses in the Northeast.”
