The latest Ferrari isn’t the most powerful ever, nor is it adorned with complex active aerodynamics. Heck, with 599 slated for production, it’s just ultra-exclusive as opposed to unobtainable. In reality is not obtainable unless you are one of the 599 who have already signed on the dotted line. But Ferrari still wants the world to dream of the new Daytona SP3, and thanks to this official Daytona online configurator, we will.
Yes, you can build the Daytona SP3 that you will never own. And after spending some time in the cool 3D configurator mode, we’re incredibly jealous of those who get one. There aren’t a million options like the ones you find at Porsche, as we suspect Ferrari is already injecting the limited-run Daytona SP3 with everything buyers want. As such, the configurator doesn’t really list the options as much as the choices. Choice of exterior and interior colors. Choice of materials and seams. Choice of wheel finishes, with emphasis on finishes because all Daytonas have the same wheel style.
There are a handful of options available. Oddly enough, the selection of Apple CarPlay is one of them. Yes, a standard item on an econobox under $ 20,000 is optional on this million dollar machine. To be fair, we don’t know if Ferrari charges extra for this, as the configurator is completely priceless. It’s not that money matters at this level, which is good as front / rear cameras and a front lift system are also listed as options.
So what does our favorite Daytona SP3 look like? We are traditionalists here at Motor1.com, so it wears an appropriate shade of Rosso Corsa with the optional two-tone overlay stripe in black and blue. All of the carbon fiber outer tips are given a matte finish, and we prefer the 20-inch forged diamond wheels with Rosso Corsa brake calipers behind them. Inside we combine Nero with Alcantara Rosso FX and blue contrast stitching. You can not not tick the box for Ferrari’s prancing horse stitched to the headrests (in yellow, of course), and you bet we want the cameras, front linkage, and Apple CarPlay.
The Daytona SP3 is the latest in Ferrari’s special Icona lineup, and it looks stunning in virtually any configuration. Its 6.5-liter V12 puts out 828 horsepower (617 kilowatts) with a redline of 9500 rpm, and we can’t help but feel a little bittersweet about it all. Without active aero systems, or hybrids, or even turbochargers, how many Ferraris will we see like this before the age of electricity consumes internal combustion power?
Our Rosso Corsa SP3 looks fabulous in red, but maybe we’ll come back for another try. And another, and another ….
