LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Sam Smith and Kim Petras took the stage on Sunday, Feb. 5 to perform “Unholy,” fresh from winning the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group, making Petras the first trans woman to win the award. The song is from “Gloria,” Smith’s fourth studio album, released Jan. 27. While Smith was seen in a long coat with red gloves and a satanic horn hat, Petras wore a red mini dress playing with whips. , chains and devil horns.

Many applauded the performance, with one saying, “IT WAS SO POWERFUL. OVER THE MOON FOR YOU.” However, many criticized the Grammys for their hypocrisy in banning Nicki Minaj from her “Roman Holiday” performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2012, but allowed the “Unholy” performance.

“Blatant hypocrisy, disrespect and bulls**t”

One wrote: “Curious.. How can Sam Smith play like this when Nicki Minaj is not allowed to play this?” Another asked, “Hasn’t Nicki Minaj been blacklisted for a similar performance that Sam Smith just did.” Another commented, “So @samsmith can play godless and be a devil on stage, but @NICKIMINAJ can’t play Roman Holiday.”

One fan wrote, “So Sam Smith just took us to HELL with that fucking devil but when Nicki Minaj wanted to free her soul from sins with the Catholic Church, that was a problem. Nicki was way ahead of his time..that’s it!” One individual tweeted, saying, “Sam Smith can do a performance like this and get praised but my girlfriend @NICKIMINAJ is still suffering from the repercussions of the performance from Roman Holiday to the #GRAMMYs.” One pointed out the hypocrisy and wrote, “#NickiMinaj was blacklisted for her Grammy performance which was deemed demonic. But #SamSmith performed an Unholy slanted song, wearing all red , a hat with devil horns and fire on stage. I got applause, and a Grammy. The blatant hypocrisy, disrespect and bullshit.”

Nicki Minaj’s Grammys Performance “Roman Holiday”

The 40-year-old rapper’s arrival in a red hooded dress standing alongside a man dressed as a pope, and her performance as an exorcist at the 2012 Grammy Awards sparked huge controversy. She hasn’t performed at the Grammys since then. In 2019, she accused Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich of deliberately snubbing her, saying, “I was bullied into being silent for seven years out of fear.”
